Frequently Asked Questions about Baby Clothes

What is baby layette?

What are the essential newborn clothes?

Newborn clothing should be soft, comfortable, easy to put on, and suitable for delicate skin.

Essential items typically include:

  • bodysuits
  • sleepsuits
  • a cardigan or wrap cardigan
  • a hat
  • booties
  • a baby blanket

These essentials make it easy to dress your baby while helping maintain a stable body temperature in the first days of life.

What size should you choose for a newborn baby?

Newborn size (50 cm / approx. 3 kg) is suitable for full-term babies. However, 1-month size (56 cm) is often a better choice, as babies grow very quickly in the first weeks.
For premature babies, size 00 (40–45 cm, from around 2 kg) is recommended.
When in doubt, it is always best to choose the larger size — especially as knitted merino wool garments naturally adapt to a baby’s shape and offer flexibility.

How many clothes do you need for a newborn ?

For the first few days, it is recommended to bring several clothing items so you can easily change your baby when needed.
Parents typically prepare:

  • 5 to 7 bodysuits4 to 6 sleepsuits
  • 2 to 3 cardigans or knitwear layers
  • 1 hat
  • 1 to 2 pairs of booties
  • 1 baby blanket

These essentials usually make up a newborn’s first wardrobe, ensuring comfort, warmth, and practicality from day one.

How do you wash baby wool clothes?

Wool baby clothing should be washed gently to preserve the softness and quality of the fibers. Hand washing or a delicate machine cycle (wool program) is generally recommended, using a detergent suitable for wool.
At Mistricotine, the merino wool used is treated with a superwash anti-felting process, allowing garments to be machine-washed at 30°C (86°F) on a wool or delicate cycle, while maintaining their softness and flexibility.
After washing, it is best to dry garments flat to preserve their shape and structure.
