Knit Newborn Essentials: How to Build a Thoughtful Layette

A well-considered layette brings together a few essential pieces, knitted in a fabric suited to the very first days. Here's how to build one, size by size, to welcome your baby with confidence.

A newborn essentials outfit brings together the garments that will wrap your baby from the very first hours. Unlike scattered purchases, it forms a coherent whole: a few pieces chosen for their softness, their cut and their ability to see you through the early weeks without irritating the skin.

We designed our knitted newborn essentials range around this requirement: to offer fine knits, careful finishing and a fabric that breathes, even against fragile skin.

The pieces that make up a complete newborn essentials outfit

A balanced outfit includes three types of garments: those that dress the body, those that protect the extremities, and those that add a layer of warmth depending on the season.

For the body, a cardigan or jacket is worn directly over the bodysuit. The cardigan fastens at the front, with no need to pull it over the head: a gesture you appreciate in the early weeks, when every change needs to remain gentle. The jacket, meanwhile, buttons all the way down and lets you dress your baby without turning them over.

For the extremities, a hat and a pair of booties complete the outfit. The hat maintains body temperature — a newborn still struggles to regulate heat, and the head represents a large surface for thermal exchange. Booties, knitted without rigid seams, keep feet warm without compressing.

Finally, depending on the season and the nursery temperature, a jumpsuit or coat adds an extra layer. The coat is worn over the cardigan for outings or cool rooms. The jumpsuit, meanwhile, dresses legs and torso in one piece.

At Mistricotine, we have created several newborn gift sets that bring these pieces together in one ensemble: cardigan, hat, booties, sometimes a coat, all knitted in the same fine merino wool.

Why choose merino wool knit for newborn essentials

Merino wool has a finer fibre than standard wool. It does not scratch, even in direct contact with skin. It is this fineness that makes it suitable for newborns, including premature babies.

It regulates temperature: it keeps warm when the air cools, but does not cause overheating when the baby stirs or the room warms up. This property is called thermoregulation. It comes from the structure of the fibre, which traps air without blocking circulation.

Merino wool is also naturally antibacterial. It absorbs moisture — light perspiration, regurgitation — without retaining odours. A garment worn for a few hours often freshens simply by airing, without requiring immediate washing.

We spin our merino wool at Fonty, a French mill established in the Creuse since the 19th century, certified Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant. The yarn undergoes a superwash treatment that allows machine washing at 30 °C maximum, on a delicate programme, in a mesh bag. You can therefore care for each piece without fear of felting, provided you dry flat.

What sizes to plan for the first months

The size of knitted newborn essentials is chosen according to the baby's stature at birth, then their development in the early weeks.

The newborn size (1 month) corresponds to a baby of 54 cm and around 4 kg. This is the standard size for a full-term newborn. It is generally worn until 4 to 6 weeks, depending on build.

The 3-month size (60 cm, 5-6 kg) takes over and accompanies the baby until 3 months. Some parents prefer to buy this size directly for outfit pieces, knowing that newborns grow quickly and that knit, slightly roomy, does not restrict.

For a premature baby, we offer two specific sizes. Preemie size 00 (40-45 cm, 1.8-2.5 kg) and size 000 (32-38 cm, 1-1.7 kg) were designed from our founding experience: a premature birth lived by Sophie, Mistricotine's founder, with her twin sister. These sizes incorporate cuts that are fitted without compression, wide openings and soft finishes.

For hats, refer to head circumference: preemie 31-33 cm, 1-3 months 41-43 cm, 6-12 months 45-47 cm. Booties are measured by foot length: preemie 7 cm, 1-3 months 9-11 cm.

Newborn essentials for a girl or boy: a question of shades

Knitted newborn essentials do not structurally distinguish cuts for girls or boys: a cardigan, a hat or booties are worn interchangeably. What changes is the colour palette.

We offer soft shades — white, ecru, pearl grey, powder pink, sky blue — that all harmonise with each other. You can compose an outfit tone on tone, or blend two shades to create a nuanced ensemble.

Some parents prefer white or ecru, timeless shades that pass from one child to another without marking gender. Others choose a defined colour to personalise the first outfits.

In all cases, our dyeing is carried out at Fonty, with a water treatment plant integrated into the mill. Colour baths are controlled to guarantee durability over time, even after several washes.

Hand knit or machine knit: what changes for newborn essentials

Not all our pieces are knitted in the same way. Hats and booties are hand-knitted, stitch by stitch. This allows tension to be adjusted, certain seams to be eliminated and rounded shapes to be created without angles.

Other pieces — such as the Pioupiou romper, the Charlotte jumpsuit, the Nono coat, the Emma jacket or certain gift sets — are also hand-knitted. These creations require longer production time, but offer incomparable knit suppleness.

Cardigans, jackets and certain jumpsuits are machine-knitted by our French knitwear specialists, based in Île-de-France. Machine knitting takes nothing away from quality: it allows consistent tension, fine gauge and valuable reproducibility for small batches.

All our pieces, whether hand or machine knitted, benefit from the same finishes: linking (stitch-by-stitch assembly, invisible to the touch), boxwood buttons made in the Jura by a manufacturer established since 1910, and final inspection before dispatch.

How to care for knitted newborn essentials so they can be passed down

Merino wool ages well, provided you respect three simple steps when caring for it.

First step: wash at 30 °C maximum, on wool or delicate programme, in a mesh laundry bag. The superwash treatment protects the fibre from felting, but heat and mechanical action can still damage the knit. Choose a gentle spin and remove the garment as soon as the cycle finishes.

Second step: dry flat, away from direct heat. Do not use a tumble dryer or radiator. Lay the garment on a clean towel, reshape it gently with your hands, then let it dry naturally. Drying flat preserves the shape and prevents the knit from stretching.

Third step: store in a breathable fabric bag, not in plastic. Wool needs to breathe, even when stored. If you are putting away a piece for several months — between two children, for example — add a sachet of lavender or cedar, which naturally repels moths without chemical treatment.

With these simple steps, a merino wool outfit passes from one baby to another without losing its softness or shape. Several customers have told us that they dressed three children in the same cardigan, and the knit remained intact.

Newborn essentials for twins: identical or coordinated pieces

For twins, you can choose two identical outfits — same model, same shade — or two coordinated pieces that differ by colour whilst keeping the same cut.

We have designed gift sets for twins that bring together two cardigans or two coats in harmonising shades. The Complicité set, for example, includes two newborn cardigans in complementary tones. The Boutchou set offers two coats that can be worn together or separately.

Some parents prefer to dress their twins identically for the early weeks, then differentiate the outfits as they grow. Others choose distinct colours from birth, to help family and caregivers tell them apart.

In both cases, the quality of knit remains the same: same merino wool, same finishes, same care. Only the colour changes.

When to start building your newborn essentials outfit

Most parents begin assembling the outfit during the third trimester, between the seventh and eighth month of pregnancy. This gives time to choose the pieces, check the sizes and wash the garments before birth.

We recommend washing each piece once before first wear, even though our merino wool is washed during production. This initial wash softens the knit further and removes any residual spinning oil.

For a premature birth, there is no way to anticipate the exact size. We dispatch orders placed before noon on the same day, which allows you to receive the outfit quickly once you know your baby's measurements. Our premature range is always in stock, precisely to meet this urgency.

If you are building an outfit to give as a gift, without knowing the baby's size in advance, choose the 3-month size. It will be worn longer and avoids the frustration of an outfit that no longer fits after a few days.

How to compose a winter or summer newborn essentials outfit

The season influences the number of layers and the weight of knit, but not the base principle: the baby needs soft, breathable pieces that adapt to temperature variations.

For a winter birth, plan a complete outfit: cardigan, hat, booties, and a coat or jumpsuit for outings. Merino wool regulates temperature without overheating, but an extra layer protects from cold when you leave the house or if the nursery is cool at night.

For a summer birth, a lighter outfit is sufficient: a short-sleeved cardigan or a simple hat and booties. Merino wool remains relevant in summer because it absorbs perspiration without retaining heat. A summer-born baby can wear a merino cardigan in an air-conditioned room or during an evening outing without discomfort.

We do not produce separate winter and summer ranges: the same pieces adapt to all seasons, simply by adjusting the number of layers and the way you dress your baby.

Newborn essentials outfit and hospital bag: what to pack

The hospital bag should contain the outfit your baby will wear to leave the maternity ward, plus one or two changes in case of regurgitation or nappy leak.

We recommend packing: one cardigan in newborn or 3-month size, one hat, one pair of booties, and one coat or jumpsuit if the season requires it. Add a merino wool blanket to wrap the baby in the car seat or pram.

Some maternity wards dress newborns in hospital-provided garments for the first hours, then return them to parents for the departure outfit. Check your maternity ward's practice to avoid packing unnecessary items.

If you are having a planned caesarean or an induction, you can pack the bag several days in advance. For a spontaneous birth, prepare the outfit from the eighth month and leave the bag in an accessible place.

Our hospital bag checklist details the items to pack, with practical advice for each category.

Newborn essentials as a birth gift: which outfit to choose

A newborn outfit makes a birth gift that will be used immediately and kept for a long time. Unlike soft toys or decorative items, it meets a concrete need and becomes part of the baby's first memories.

If you do not know the baby's size, choose a 3-month outfit or a complete set that includes several sizes. Our Bonheur, Joie and Amour sets offer pieces that accompany the baby from birth to several months.

If you prefer to offer a single piece, a blanket or a cardigan is always welcome. The blanket is used from birth, in the pram, the car seat or for tummy time. The cardigan is worn every day, over the bodysuit, and passes from one child to another.

We also offer a Mistricotine gift card, valid for 16 months, which lets parents choose the pieces and sizes themselves. The card is available in four amounts: 50 €, 80 €, 100 € and 150 €.

How many pieces should I plan for in a newborn layette?

A balanced layette typically includes two cardigans or jackets, two hats, two pairs of booties, and one additional warm piece depending on the season. This foundation ensures you can change your baby comfortably while keeping purchases intentional. Our gift sets bring these essentials together in coordinated collections.

Can I machine-wash knit merino wool newborn essentials?

Yes. Thanks to the superwash treatment, our pieces can be machine-washed at 30 °C maximum, on a wool or delicate cycle, inside a mesh laundry bag. Use a gentle spin and lay flat to dry. Avoid tumble drying and ironing to preserve the structure of the knit.

What size should I choose for a newborn whose weight I don't yet know?

The 1-month size (54 cm, approximately 4 kg) suits most full-term newborns. If you're unsure or want to plan ahead for the early weeks, our size guide sets out the full correspondences. If in doubt, contact us at 06 65 97 58 27.

Are all the booties and hats hand-knitted?

Yes. All our booties and hats are hand-knitted, piece by piece. This craft approach ensures finishes free of rigid seams and a softness suited to newborns. The other layette pieces are machine-knitted, then made up with careful linking stitch in our Île-de-France workshop.

Can I give a layette set as a gift if I don't know the baby's size yet?

Absolutely. You can choose our newborn gift card, valid for 16 months and available in four amounts (50 €, 80 €, 100 €, 150 €). It allows the parents to select the size and pieces when the time comes, without any pressure.
