A layette designed for the first months
You are preparing for your little girl's arrival: each piece must naturally find its place in her first wardrobe. At Mistricotine, we dress newborns and little ones in garments knitted in France, using fine merino wool spun by Fonty mill, holder of the Living Heritage Company label. Soft, supple, breathable and naturally temperature-regulating, this wool offers a gentle touch against baby's delicate skin.
Each piece is made with particular attention to the quality of the knit and the finishing. Linking—also called fully fashioned finishing—consists of picking up the knit stitches one by one to achieve seamless, refined edges. When designs include buttons, they are made from boxwood by a Jura workshop established since 1910. Bonnets and booties are hand-knitted in France.
How to build a newborn wardrobe
For the first weeks, cardigans and crossover tops are especially practical: their openings make dressing easier and allow you to add or remove a layer depending on the temperature. The pullover sweater finds its place later, as baby grows. Plan for three to four cardigans for the first weeks, and perhaps one or two more to reduce the need for frequent washing.
Rompers and trousers complete the wardrobe over the first months. The Inès romper or Piou-Piou bodysuit dress baby in a single piece, while the Chacha trousers pair easily with a cardigan or sweater. A few well-chosen pieces are enough to vary outfits without multiplying garments.
Add a blanket: Tatou or Titou accompanies baby in your arms, in the stroller or during skin-to-skin moments. Merino wool absorbs moisture and helps reduce the sensation of dampness, while providing gentle warmth when the air is cool.
Which size to choose at birth?
Size 1 month corresponds to approximately 54 cm and 4 kg. Size 3 months corresponds to approximately 60 cm and 5-6 kg. For a premature baby, Mistricotine also offers the preemie 00 size, adapted to smaller frames of approximately 40-45 cm and 1.8-2.5 kg.
Consult the size guide to choose the most suitable size based on baby's height and weight.
Merino wool: a fibre suited to first garments
Merino wool is valued for its softness, suppleness and naturally temperature-regulating properties. It helps baby retain warmth when the air is cool while allowing air to circulate. Breathable, it also absorbs moisture and helps reduce the sensation of dampness.
Mistricotine wool benefits from a superwash treatment that makes care easier and helps limit felting. Garments are machine-washed at 30 °C maximum, on a wool or delicate programme, ideally in a mesh laundry bag. Drying is done flat, away from heat sources and never in a tumble dryer.
Completing the layette or giving a piece
You are building your little girl's wardrobe piece by piece: each garment can be chosen separately and freely coordinated with the rest of the collection. To bring together several pieces in a single gift, our sets and layettes combine coordinated garments and accessories in a presentation ready to offer. Gift box is included from 90 €.
For a winter birth, favour layering: cardigan, sweater, trousers, bonnet or blanket make it easy to adapt the outfit to the temperature. For a summer birth, a few fine knits remain useful in the morning, evening, during journeys or in air-conditioned spaces.
Traceable manufacturing, entirely French
Each garment is part of French manufacturing. The wool is spun in Creuse by Fonty mill, founded in the 19th century and holder of the Living Heritage Company label. Knitting and making-up of layettes are carried out in Île-de-France, with our French contractors, specialists in knitwear. Pieces are produced in small batches with particular attention to the regularity of the knit and the finishing.
This traceability, from yarn to knit, is part of Mistricotine's expertise.

You dress your little girl in pieces designed to be worn, loved, kept and passed down. Well cared for, a cardigan, sweater or blanket can accompany another child as baby grows. This is the idea that guides Mistricotine: to pass on gentleness from one child to another.
How many cardigans should I plan for a baby girl at birth?
Plan for 3 to 4 cardigans for the first weeks, and perhaps one or two more to reduce the need for frequent washing. Add 2 to 3 trousers or rompers, a sweater for cooler moments, as well as a bonnet, booties and a blanket. The number may vary depending on the season and small daily incidents, such as spit-up. For the hospital, always check the list provided by your maternity ward.
Can merino wool be worn on sensitive skin or eczema-prone skin?
Fine merino wool, such as that used by Mistricotine, is known for its softness and does not scratch like traditional wool. Breathable and moisture-wicking, it is often well tolerated by sensitive skin. However, every baby is different. If your child has diagnosed eczema or a particular sensitivity, we recommend consulting your paediatrician or dermatologist before introducing wool garments.
How do I care for merino wool newborn essentials?
Machine wash at 30 °C maximum, on wool or delicate programme, ideally in a mesh bag. Use a wool-specific or gentle detergent, with low spin. Dry flat, away from direct heat and never in a tumble dryer. No ironing required. Mistricotine wool benefits from a superwash treatment that makes care easier and helps limit felting.
